Sports betting has its own style that in some cases contradicts other common style points. Decimals, the plus sign, and the minus sign are used whereas in other cases they would not be.

Point spreads

Use a + to denote the underdog: +2.5

Use a – to denote the favorite: -4.0

When possible phrase the sentence in a way that the +/- is unnecessary: The Mavericks are 3.5-point favorites over the Magic.

Moneyline

Use a + to denote the underdog: +110

Use a – to denote the favorite: -120

Odds

When expressed as odds, use digits and hyphens, but no “to”: The odds were 7-2 in favor of Evander Holyfield.
