sourcing

All statements of fact must be supported by a source.

Acceptable sources may be a primary source, such as an interview or document accessed directly by the reporter, or a secondary source, such as another reputable news outlet.

When relaying the information, every effort should be made to utilize the exact wording and sentiment expressed by the original source. Do not take facts or quotes out of context. Clarify the intended meaning, if necessary.

Not all sources are reputable. You are just as responsible as the original source for ensuring the trustworthiness of the information. Do not spread disinformation or misinformation. Avoid amplifying disingenuous messages and insincere voices.

Use of “reportedly” is discouraged. Instead, strive to provide the name and affiliation of the reporter, along with when the information was reported. For example, rather than “Carlos Boozer reportedly will miss Thursday’s game,” write Carlos Boozer will miss Thursday’s game, WFAN-FM reported Wednesday.

Sources should be named. If a source refuses to allow their name to be used, however, confer with an editor or trusted colleague (if not editor is available) to determine whether using an anonymous source is appropriate under the circumstances.
